Ancient Wisdom Encapsulated: AWE Cosmeceuticals Product Review

Ever getting closer to the big 3-0, skincare to me is no longer just about clean blemish-free skin like it was in my early twenties, it’s now about younger looking skin, smoother skin, a brighter complexion and even pigmentation. We all strive for perfection in our own ways to help us feel good in our own skin, and the now-booming industry of cosmeceuticals (pharmaceutical-grade cosmetics) have brought non-surgical treatments for all our skin woes to the high street shelves.

It’s a big market with a myriad of choices, so how do we choose what’s right for us?

In the new world of anti-ageing creams and pigmentation potions, I would put most products into one of two “boxes”. Medical grade or Natural. Pretty self-explanatory… The majority feedback that I get re these two “types” though is that the medical grade products often deliver good results (though at what cost to your skin?) and the natural products, which are preferred due to their non-toxic ingredients, often fall short of their promises on effectiveness. It’s a catch 22 situation… or is it?

Enter AWE Cosmeceuticals.

The mission statement of this brand is to blend nature’s highest quality ingredients with modern science to deliver the best in innovative, medical grade skin care solutions, naturally. Their products provide solutions for all the usual skin complaints; pigmentation, acne, sensitive, sun damaged and ageing skin. Based on extensive Ayurvedic studies (natural ancient Indian medicine) fused with the latest western scientific findings, AWE Cosmeceuticals claims to finally give us the best of both worlds; Cosmeceuticals that work, that won’t pump us full of harmful chemicals and toxins in the process.

I gave a couple of their products a whirl to see what they are all about:

The Lightening Travel Collection

Being an avid traveller and adventurer, I am always collecting bitesize products that won’t take up too much valuable space in my suitcase, but will last me for the duration of my trip. On top of that, I am the worst for getting just that little bit too much sun on my travels – which is something I am getting ever more conscious of as the years go on – and so it seemed only natural that I would test out the ‘Lightening Travel Collection’ by AWE Cosmeceuticals.

The collection consists of three bitesized products, being the Gentle Cleanser, the Skin Polish and the Lightening Serum, as well as a bamboo face cloth, and all stored in a handy little travel cosmetic bag that is the perfect size to throw into your suitcase.

Gentle Cleanser

What it does: The AWE Cosmeceuticals Gentle Cleanser provides ‘The Essence of Clarity’, combining natural surfactants with the mild exfoliating properties of papain and anti-oxidants to remove surface oils, make-up and skin impurities. Designed to leave the skin feeling clean and refreshed, AWE Cosmeceuticals’ hot tip is to always cleanse twice to effectively remove all traces of your make-up.

What I like about it: The combination of potent natural ingredients such as Green Tea, Gotu Kola, Willowbank, Sandalwood Oil and Papain, creates a refreshingly non-clinical aromatic scent. The smooth serum continues to tantalise your senses with an initial feel of, very slightly rough, cleansing properties, rapidly followed by a silky smooth feeling across the surface of your skin which continues to last after you have rinsed the cleanser off with warm water. The natural outdoor scents add a spa-like property to your daily beauty regime which provides a zen-like feeling after application as you continue to feel and smell refreshed as the day goes on.

What I don’t like about it: At first go, the texture was a funny one for me. Purely from a “what you’re used to” point of view, the cleanser felt a little too oily and/or sticky on first application. That said, once you start massaging it into your skin, it foams up like any other cleanser and the sticky feeling soon disappates.

Rating: 8/10

Skin Polish

What it does: The AWE Cosmeceuticals Skin Polish provides ‘The Essence of Refinement’, blending the mildest of natural exfoliants with potent anti-oxidants, to gently exfoliate the skin. Recommended for use 1 – 2 times per week, and delicately fragranced with essential oils of rose and jasmine, the Skin Polish aims to leave your skin feeling soft, bright and refreshed.

What I like about it: Even more so than the Cleanser, I love love love the scent of this product. The smell has an automatic calming affect on me, and makes me feel like I’m having a luxurious girls’ pamper day whenever I use it. The grittiness in the product does exactly what it says on the tin; it polishes the skin. I suffer from dry skin during the winter months, and I was really impressed with how smooth my skin felt after using the Skin Polish. I also love how AWE Cosmeceuticals are very open and honest about their product’s ingredients, and more importantly why each and every ingredient has been put into the product and what purpose it serves.

What I don’t like about it: To be honest, I am struggling to come up with a reason not to buy this product. It’s a sensual retreat and skin haven in a bottle. Magic!

Lightening Serum

What it does: The AWE Cosmeceuticals Lightening Serum provides ‘The Essence of Light’, formulated using bio-mimetic peptides to help reduce the appearance of skin discolouration, including freckles, post inflammatory hyper pigmentation, sun spots and melasma.

What I like about it: This is the product that I was most excited to try due to my ever-growing hang-ups with the development of skin spots and hyper pigmentation after years of travelling through my early twenties with a blissful ignorance about what damage that the sun was doing to my skin. As with the previous two products, I keep coming back to the sensual and spa-like emotions that these products provide. While I haven’t had the chance to review the long-term benefits of the lightening serum yet, in the short while that I have been using the products I can really feel a difference in my complexion. I feel refreshed, I’m told my complexion looks brighter, and I’m actually looking forward to my daily beauty ritual to bask in those cherished moments of self-pampering!

What I don’t like about it: A very personal and nit-picky observation, I am not a fan of licorice (commonly known as liquorice) and you can really smell it in this product. However, the scent is not so potent that it would stop me from continuing to reap the lightening benefits of this serum!

Rating: 9/10

Bamboo Face Cloth

An added bonus to the Travel Packs, which can also be purchased as a stand alone product, the AWE Cosmeceuticals 100% Bamboo Face Cloth is easily the softest face cloth I have ever had the pleasure of using! A must-buy to use with your cleanser and skin polish, I would recommend this to anybody and everybody.

Rating: 10/10

Calming Serum

What it does: The AWE Cosmeceuticals Calming Serum provides ‘The Essence of Tranquility’, boasting natural anti-oxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamin D to help protect the fragile skin barrier. Applied to skin post-peel, after laser/IPL, shaving, waxing or microdermabrasion treatment, to skin suffering from rosacea or eczema, or just to skin exposed to pollution, dry air and too much sun, the serum works to gently soothe sensitised skin.

What I like about it: Cool and refreshing, soothing with yet another heavenly scent, there’s not a lot not to like about this calming serum. My skin feels hydrated and smooth, and from its subtle coolness I can certainly imagine how amazing it would feel on irritated skin! A day spa treatment from the comfort of your own home or hotel room, this product is going straight in my suitcase ready to provide me with a sanctuary spa retreat, anywhere, anytime, all around the world.

What I don’t like about it: Erm…. Nothing???

Rating: 10/10

Final Verdict

I was initially concerned by all the different weird and wonderful textures and scents that I might break out in blemishes as a result of using AWE Cosmeceuticals’ products. However, not only did my skin remain clear, but my complexion feels and looks noticeably brighter! The serums are not too heavy and give my skin a suppleness and smoothness that makes me want to touch it all day long (trying not to!!). I would definitely recommend these products to anyone who is a) looking for a medical grade beauty regime that is non-toxic and all-natural and b) looking to add a spa-like beauty routine to their relaxing vacation, or even just to wind you down after a hard day’s work in the smog of the big City.

These products are beautiful, refreshing, sensual and luxurious, and are genuinely suitable for anyone – even if you are not a follower of the traditions and medicinal practices of Ayurveda, yet!

Once you give it a go though, the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda may encapsulate you!
